Middle school and junior high students have different needs than kids of other age groups. To help you best reach and teach them, UCM offers a stand-alone middle-level education program. In fact, our program is the largest in Missouri and has been recognized nationally by the Association of Middle Level Education (AMLE).

What you will study

Your journey to become a speech communication and theatre teacher will start on UCM鈥檚 Warrensburg campus. Learn from our faculty who have all worked in middle-level education and are committed to helping you become a capable and thoughtful educator. They鈥檒l also guide you and provide feedback as you balance coursework while gaining teaching experience in a middle school or junior high classroom. This will begin in your sophomore year and continue throughout the program, so you鈥檒l be proficient and comfortable in leading your own classroom as a student teacher.

Speech communication and theatre teacher coursework

Get to the root of your desire to become a speech communication and theatre teacher with a wide array of topics in speech and theatre. Courses cover communication, acting and stagecraft, among others designed for our middle-level education program. 

We also offer a minor specifically designed to complement this BSE program. The Speech Communication and Theatre minor for BSE will help you sharpen your focus and extend your learning to broaden your teaching skills.

You will use the knowledge and skills obtained in the Middle School/Junior High School program to:

  • Apply knowledge when making curricular decisions, planning and implementing instruction, participating in middle level practices, and providing healthy and effective learning environments for all young adolescents.
  • Use knowledge and available resources to design, implement, and evaluate challenging, developmentally responsive curriculum that results in meaningful learning outcomes.
  • Define the developmentally responsive middle level programs and schools, and they work successfully within middle level organizational components.
  • Use and reflect on research related to data-informed instruction and assessment. Employ a variety of developmentally appropriate instructional strategies, information literacy skills, and technologies to meet the learning needs of all young adolescents.
  • Engage in practices and behaviors that develop their competence as middle level professionals. Demonstrate positive dispositions and engage in ethical professional behaviors.
