Admission Information and Requirements

Admissions into the Master of Science in Aviation Safety program is made on a holistic basis, two-step process. Students apply online through the UCM website; and all documents/materials are submitted to the Graduate Studies office, as per the instructions. After an initial evaluation, the application files that meet the admission requirements for graduate studies are forwarded to the Department of Aviation. The department will then review the application and make an admission determination.

In addition to the university鈥檚 basic graduate admission requirements, the following are additional requirements for acceptance into the MS Aviation Safety program:

  • A degree in an aviation related field or at least three years of work experience in aviation.
  • A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.70 (based on A=4.00 scale) for all undergraduate work.
  • A Statement of Purpose describing your academic/professional achievements, purpose of continuing graduate studies, and future goals. The length should be strictly between 300-500 words.
  • Two letters of recommendations. They can be academic, professional, or a combination of both.

Accelerated Program

Accelerated Bachelor鈥檚/Master鈥檚 degree programs in the UCM Department of Aviation provide current undergraduate aviation students the opportunity to substitute graduate courses for required or elective courses in their undergraduate program and then subsequently count those same courses for graduate credit in the MS Aviation Safety program.

Upon admission into the graduate program, students can enroll in graduate courses only after their junior year (90 earned hours). Up to 12 hours of graduate coursework may be taken during the student鈥檚 senior year and counted to meet both the Bachelor鈥檚 and Master鈥檚 degree requirements. Students complete the remaining graduate coursework in their fifth year. Students may not enroll in additional graduate courses until their undergraduate degree is completed.

Accelerated MS students may be eligible to include the following courses as overlap between the undergraduate and graduate programs. They would be taken at the Graduate level (5XXX):

  • AVIA 4090 Aviation Law (3)
  • AVIA 4420 Air Transportation (3)
  • AVIA 4430 Corporate Aviation Management (3)
  • AVIA 4500 Aviation Safety (3)

Admission into the Accelerated BS/MS program requires a minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 2.70 or higher. Visit the Department of Aviation鈥檚 Graduate Coordinator to find out how to take advantage of this opportunity.
