5 New Year’s Resolutions that UCM Makes Easy

By Ellen Blaize, January 3, 2018

New Year's Resolutions

As you return from the holiday break feeling refreshed and ready to take on a new semester, it’s good to have goals for what you’d like to accomplish. New Year’s resolutions can be hard to stick to, but here are a few that we can help you accomplish:

1. Join a Student Organization

Have a specific interest? Whether it be academic, community service, cultural, recreational, religious or social/greek, UCM has more than 200 student organizations to choose from. Joining is a great way to get involved on campus and build connections with people who share your passions. Check out the student orgs UCM has to offer and get signed up!

2. Get Fit at the Student Rec Center

Ok, this one’s a given. The majority of everyone's number one goal is to get healthy, especially around the New Year,. You’re probably already aware of all the awesome workout equipment available to students, as well as the fitness rooms for aerobics, spinning, kickboxing and weight lifting, the walking track and of course, the rock climbing wall. But did you know that SRWC also has personal trainers? Working with a PT is a great way to achieve your fitness and health goals in a safe and effective environment. Make sure you check out the other resources the SRWC has to offer.

3. Attend Student Events On Campus

As a student, you probably feel overwhelmed with responsibilities. Make a point to take a break from the stress to attend student events on campus. The Spotlight is made up of UCM students dedicated to providing a variety of entertaining and exciting events that range from comedians and inflatables to games and movies. The best part? All Spotlight events are free! Stay up to date with the latest student events by checking Spotlight’s event calendar.

4. Develop a Study Schedule

Block time in your calendar and give yourself at least an hour each day to dedicate to your school work. A good tip is to create a “study zone.” Whether that’s a desk in your room, a table at the library, or a comfy chair in the student union, picking a specific location for your studies will trigger your studying habits as soon as you enter the area. Finally, put your phone on silent. The easiest distractions are only a click away, so if possible, leave it in another room altogether. Creating a realistic and consistent study routine will help you stay organized and reach your goals for the semester. If you need help with a paper, check out the Writing Center, where you can get free, one-on-one help from a tutor.

5. Explore our Culture of Service by Volunteering

Volunteering not only helps others, but it can be very rewarding. It helps you gain confidence, learn new skills, take on challenges and make a difference. At UCM, Student Volunteer Services provide opportunities for students to participate in activities on campus and in the surrounding Warrensburg community.
