UCM Performing Arts Series Presents Collaborative Concert with the Kansas City Symphony

By Mike Greife, November 9, 2015

WARRENSBURG, MO 鈥 The Performing Arts Series and the Department of Music at the University of Central Missouri will present a world premiere performance of Soldier鈥檚 Tale/Devil鈥檚 Tale at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16 in Hart Recital Hall.

The concert will bring together musicians from the Department of Music faculty and the Kansas City Symphony, with dramatic and dance performance by faculty and students from the UCM Department of Theatre and Dance.

The evening will pair the classic dramatic work Histoire du Soldat (The Soldier鈥檚 Tale) with the modernsequel, The Devil鈥檚 Tale. Soldier鈥檚 Tale, composed in 1916 by Igor Stravinsky, is a theatrical work conceived around the writings of C.F. Ramuz and based on a Russian folk tale of a soldier who trades his violin to the devil in return for unlimited financial gain.

Devil鈥檚 Tale was written in 2013 for the same performing forces by American composer James Stephenson as an ambitious sequel to Stravinsky鈥檚 famous work, weaving the story from the point at which the original left off and circling back to the point at which the entire adventure began.

Scott Lubaroff, chair of the Department of Music and director of bands, will conduct the ensemble, and John Wilson, chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance, will perform the narrated and dramatic parts.

Tickets for Soldier鈥檚 Tale/Devil鈥檚 Tale are $3 for students and $7 for adults and are available online at ucmpas.com, at the Central Tickets box office in Admin100B from 9-11 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, by calling 660-543-8888, and one hour prior to show time at Hart Recital Hall.

This concert is part of PAS Guest Artist Series in partnership with the Kansas City Symphony Community Outreach Program.

Financial assistance for this project has been provided by the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.
