Annual Provost's Faculty Showcase Opens 2016-17 Performing Arts Season

WARRENSBURG, MO 鈥 Deborah Curtis, provost and chief learning officer at the University of Central Missouri, in conjunction with The Performing Arts Series and the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, will open the 2016-2017 performance season as she hosts the annual Provost鈥檚 Faculty Showcase of the Arts, presented by the Department of Music at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24 in Hart Recital Hall.

Titled 鈥淪haring from the Hart,鈥 the event will feature the talents of faculty from the the Department of Music, Department of Theatre and Dance, and the Department of Art and Design. Featured performers will be the UCM Brass Ensemble and pianists Jon and Mia Hynes. Tenor Jacob Sentgeorge, Alan Wenger, trumpet, and Stella Roden, soprano, all will be accompanied by Mia Hynes on piano.

Saxophonist Eric Honour and Jeff Kaiser, trumpet, will present an Improv piece for trumpet, saxophone and electronics, and Roger Oyster, principal trombonist for the Kansas City Symphony, will perform with Mia Hynes.

Also on the program will be performances by some of the newest members of the music faculty, including Alastair Wright on saxophone, Jeff Kaiser on trumpet and Elisabeth Stimpert on clarinet. Rounding out the program will be John Wilson, chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance, performing a scene from William Shakespeare鈥檚 鈥淗amlet.鈥

This year鈥檚 event again will feature visual art from the Faculty Art Exhibit, currently on display at UCM鈥檚 Gallery of Art and Design. The program will draw parallels between the music performed and the visual art on display.

The public also is invited to attend a free pre-concert presentation titled 鈥淒o You Hear What I Hear? An Introductory Note鈥 at 6:30 p.m. in Utt 100, presented by Lifelong Learning at UCM. Musicologist Allison Robbins will give an explanatory prelude to the music that will be played in the showcase.

The public is invited to attend, and admission is free, although advance ticketing is required to assure adequate seating. Free tickets will be available starting Monday, Aug. 15, at the Central Tickets Box Office in Administration 100-B, the Department of Music in Utt 109, the Department of Theatre in Martin 113 and the Office of the Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences in Martin 126.
