WARRENSBURG, MO 鈥 The 欧美视频 Center for Religious Studies
will host the third annual Trading Moon Pow Wow from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, Nov.
4, in the UCM Student Recreation and Wellness Center. The event is free and open to
the public.
This year鈥檚 pow wow will feature additional traditional Native American gourd dancing
demonstrations, performed in full traditional regalia. The host drums for the pow
wow will be Big Soldier Creek on the northern drum, with head singer Trilby Wahwasuck,
and The Young Bucks on the southern drum, with head singer A. J. Esau. Orlando Begay
or Kayenta, Ariz will be Head Man, and Aliey Showtalker, Gainesville, Mo., will be
head lady. Bob Woolery, Sedalia, will be head gourd dancer, and Kilan Jacobs, Bartlesville,
Okla, will be arena director. All dancers and drums are welcome.
The grand entries are scheduled for 1:30 and 6:30 p.m., followed by intertribal dances.
The event will provide narrated demonstrations of traditional Native American dance,
and Native American crafts and merchandise will be on display and available for purchase.
A meal for will be provided for participants at 5 p.m.
Information booths will be available, offering information on UCM admissions, financial
aid, veterans affairs and UCM graduate studies.
According the Catherine Burris, director of the Center or Religious Studies, the pow
wow was developed to 鈥渇oster awareness of area Native American culture and let the
local Native American community know that we respect and their traditional and culture.鈥
Support for the 2017 Trading Moon Pow Wow has been provided by the Missouri Arts Council
and the Missouri Humanities Council, state agencies. Additional support has been provided
by the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; the Department of History,
Sociology, Anthropology, and Cross-Disciplinary Studies; the Department of English
and Philosophy; The Center for Religious Studies; and the Department of Communication.
