Dr. Roger Best, UCM president, congratulates Dr. Laurel Hogue (right), vice provost
for online and learning engagement, and Clarinda Dir, UCM program manager, for their
leadership of our nationally recognized program. UCM received the Outstanding Program
Award for its learn-as-you-earn CNA partnership, created to fill critical healthcare
positions. UCM was one of just two programs receiving the national award from the
University of Professional and Continuing Education Association at a recent Orlando
conference.
Through the unique collaboration, qualifying adult learners receive debt-free scholarships
from the Full Employment Council, Truman Heartland Community Foundation and Community
Services League as well as financial assistance from the healthcare organizations.
The partnering healthcare facilities include Children鈥檚 Mercy Hospital, John Knox
Village and University Health Lakewood Medical Center.
鈥淢any of the students in these critical-needs programs do not have the resources to
stop working while they pursue these certifications,鈥 said Clarinda Dir, UCM Center
for Workforce and Professional Development program manager who oversees the learn-as-you-earn
CNA partnerships. 鈥淭hanks to the agreements with the healthcare facilities, the students
earn a salary during their training period and are also offered a permanent job with
the facility where they have trained.鈥
