WARRENSBURG, MO 鈥 An opportunity for students and other interested individuals to
see the judicial process in action, the Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District,
will convene at the 欧美视频 in Warrensburg on Oct. 12. The
oral arguments will be held in the ballroom of the Elliott Student Union. Beginning
at 9:30 a.m., a three-judge panel consisting of Chief Judge Gary Witt, Judge Mark
Pfeiffer, and Special Judge Louis Angles will hear oral arguments in four cases. After
the oral arguments, the judges will take time to discuss the court system and take
general questions from the audience. Chief Judge Witt will preside over the court
proceedings at UCM.
Judge Witt joined the Western District in 2010. Prior to his appointment, he served
as an associate circuit judge in the 6th Judicial Circuit (Platte County). His background
also includes practicing law in Platte County and service in the Missouri House of
Representatives. Judge Pfeiffer was appointed to the Western District in 2009. Before
his appointment to the judiciary, he practiced law in Springfield and Columbia. Judge
Angles has served as an associate circuit judge of the 7th Judicial Circuit (Clay
County) since 2013.
Although the court regularly convenes in Kansas City, for more than 20 years it has
held dockets in several of the 45 counties in its jurisdiction. This includes all
of northwest Missouri and most of central Missouri. By hearing oral arguments outside
of Kansas City. the court provides individuals an opportunity to observe a part of
the judicial system they normally do not see and to familiarize those attending with
the court's role in the judicial system. UCM has been a host site for such opportunities
for many years, enabling students, faculty, staff and others to learn more about the
appeals process and to interact with judges who hear court cases through question
and answer sessions.
